The takeaway

OpenAI is systematically building ChatGPT into a full productivity suite. With NextSlide, presentations join text, code, and images as native capabilities — tightening competition with Microsoft and standalone tools like Gamma.

Why it matters for builders

Foundation model companies are racing to own entire workflows, not just text generation. For builders on OpenAI's APIs, presentation-generation endpoints likely follow next — closing the window for standalone AI productivity tools.

OpenAI Acquires NextSlide to Add Presentations to ChatGPT

OpenAI has acquired NextSlide, a startup specializing in AI-powered presentation creation, folding its team directly into ChatGPT development. The deal, which took place earlier this year but was only publicly confirmed on August 8, adds visual communication tools to OpenAI's expanding productivity suite.

What Happened

NextSlide founder Ahmed Beshry announced the acquisition on the startup's website and LinkedIn. The company's product transformed prompts, notes, documents, or research into polished, editable presentations. Financial terms were not disclosed.

"The ultimate goal was to make visual communication more accessible and help more people express their ideas clearly," Beshry wrote. "By joining OpenAI, the team will continue pursuing that same mission: building AI products that help people create, communicate, and turn their ideas into meaningful work."

Beshry previously co-founded Caper AI, a smart-cart startup acquired by Instacart in 2021, giving him a track record of successful exits in AI-adjacent spaces. In a LinkedIn post, he noted the announcement was coming "a few months late" since the deal closed earlier this year.

Why It Matters

The acquisition signals OpenAI's ambition to evolve ChatGPT beyond text into a full multimodal productivity platform. Rather than sending users to separate tools like PowerPoint or Google Slides, OpenAI wants presentation creation to happen natively inside ChatGPT — from drafting talking points to designing finished slide decks.

This puts OpenAI in direct competition with Microsoft's AI-powered PowerPoint Designer and Copilot features, as well as standalone AI presentation tools like Gamma, which hit $102 million in annual recurring revenue by late 2025. The broader AI slides market has been consolidating rapidly: early player Tome exited consumer presentations in March 2025, and Anthropic already ships native PowerPoint generation inside Claude.

Builder Impact

For AI builders and automation engineers, this is another signal that foundation model companies are racing to own entire workflows — not just text generation. ChatGPT is becoming a platform where users create text, code, images, and now presentations without leaving the interface. The NextSlide team brings user-centric design expertise that could accelerate ChatGPT's evolution into a workspace hub, not just a chatbot.

For developers building on OpenAI's APIs, expect presentation-generation endpoints to follow — likely as structured outputs like slide JSON or PPTX generation that integrate with existing automation pipelines. If you're building AI-powered productivity tools, the window for standalone presentation products is narrowing fast.

The acquisition also continues OpenAI's aggressive M&A pace: according to TechCrunch, this is the company's ninth acquisition so far in 2026 alone, following purchases of Ona, Promptfoo, and Torch earlier this year.
